NEW Dressmaking course- January 2015

We are excited to announce that we have a new Dressmaking course starting in January.

We will be following one of the latest patterns by Colette; Dahlia. A gorgeously wearable dress with a number of variations in the skirt and sleeve.
Suitable for those with some dressmaking and sewing experience.
The focus will be on understanding patterns, measuring, fitting and finishing techniques, to produce a beautifully finished garment.
Sewing techniques will cover the use of a sewing machine and domestic overlocker.
You will need to bring your own fabric, we will provide the pattern, tuition and smiles!

We are really looking forward to making this dress in the new year, so come and join us and get 2015 off to a creative start!

DIY Honeycomb decoration

Why not add a little creativity to the run up to Christmas by making your own hanging honeycomb paper decorations.



All you need is:

Tissue paper
A4 paper
Glue stick
2 different coloured pens
Scissors
Needle and thread

Draw a series of lines 3cm apart, alternating the colours.

Usin 6 sheets of tissue paper. Fold it into 8 rectangles and then cut them up so it makes 48 individual small rectangles.
Lay one down on top of your template.

Start by gluing along all of the green lines, then place another sheet of tissue down and glue along the opposite red lines. You must alternate the glue lines between each sheet. Repeat with all your sheets! 

Draw a circle that will fit within your rectangle and cut it in half. Stick one half onto the top of your tissue.

Carefully cut around your semi circle. The straight edge should be cut flush against the edge, but the curve needs to have a bit of an overlap. stick the other semi circle onto the other side of your tissue.

Open out your honeycomb to make sure it's not all stuck together.

Using a needle and thread, poke a whole in each corner and tie a knot that's 2cm away from the paper. This allows the ball to fan out properly without falling apart.

Curve round the honeycomb ball and glue the 2 semi circles together or you could paper clip them, if you wanted to be able to make them flat again for storage.

Let's Get Sewing on Saturday!

Join us this Saturday for our Let's Get Sewing workshop!
10am-1pm Saturday 8th November £35

Perfect for the complete beginner or those who need a refresher.
The morning is divided into two halves; learning to thread a machine, wind on a bobbin and building confidence through sewing different seams. Then moving onto learning different sewing techniques such as, applying binding, button holes, zips or a patch pocket. This varies depending on the time and ability of the class.

New arrivals- Organic flannel

We have a selection of fabulous flannels or brushed cottons new to Flo-Jo  this week.

They are all 100% organic cotton and made by Birch.

Some of you may recognise the camper rally print; however this is a beautiful soft cotton flannel, which would be lovely and snuggly for the coming winter months.

We've made a very cute baby sleeping bag with the Big Sur fabric, I’d like one in my size! As well as a pair of pyjama bottoms made from the Bear Hike fabric, which comes in a soft shroom shade with little orange bears dotted throughout.

We also have a new organic cotton knit in two colours, mustard and teal. We love the simple ‘Twig’ print and the colours are perfect for the autumn.

Happy Halloween!

It's nearing Halloween and the Day of the Dead Festival. We've got our bunting up in the window and you can make some too, with our Happy Halloween Bunting Kit at just £12. It comes with; bunting tape, orange and black fabric and the printed Happy Halloween fabric. 

Our Day of the Dead window celebrates and gives thanks to our family no longer here and our ancestors, without whom we wouldn't be here! Our families seem to sit very happily together surrounded by flowers! 

Rainy day fun!

In need of a few ideas for the kids this half term?

Vintage Pattern Cape Coat Course

New to our workshop calendar is a fabulous vintage pattern winter cape coat. It will be running for 5 weeks starting on Thursday 6th November 6:30-9pm. £120 including wool fabric.

You will learn how to follow a vintage pattern, line or bind your cape, make welt pockets and bound button holes.
You will be able to choose from a selection of wool in the shop. We have a choice of plain colours, as well as check, tartan, and the very on trend houndstooth. This is included in the price of the course.
You will also need lining fabric or binding and buttons.

New in this week!

We are very excited to have had a delivery of new winter fabrics this week, with more to come, throughout October.

Tartans are a popular winter staple and we've got two lovely styles in so far; a traditional Royal Stewart red tartan and a more subtle blue black tartan.  We also have a very on trend monochrome Hound-tooth, which would make a fabulous statement pencil skirt or pair of tapered trousers.

There is also a beautiful Herringbone organic cotton.

Lampshade Making Workshop

Hats or lampshades?

Yesterday we had a lovely group of ladies, learning to make drum-style lampshades.

We took them through the whole process; ironing, lining up, measuring, placing, rolling and finishing. (With a tea and biscuit break in the middle) By the end we’d created a perfect 30cm lampshade for the ceiling or a table lamp.

They looked great and we had some perfect matching with chevrons and dots, which are not easy!

New in this week we have the September Blue collection from Dashwood Studio, designed by Susan Driscoll (theprinttree.com). 100% cotton £14pm.

The collection is described as having a nostalgic colour palette to recall long hot, lazy days walking in the countryside amongst the wildflowers, birds and butterflies.

The mustard shade is my favourite, especially for Autumn/Winter 2014. I think it would make a perfect Peter Pan collar blouse.
